When we embarked on building our "forever home" we had a list of five custom home builders to contact. The first three were recommendations from friends and our real estate agent, but they just didn't seem to be the right fit. We contacted Hurd and the connection was immediate. Their introduction process was unlike any of the other builders which set the apart so much that we didn't even contact the 5th builder. Russ and Mel's genuineness is their best selling feature. With Mel and Russ helping us finalize our design and build plans and Natasha guiding us with personal touches (cabinets, flooring, colors, paint, etc), the process was difficult, but very exciting. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Billy, who took care of any minor adjustments that needed taking care of. Mel and Russ Hurd are the salt of the Earth… Honest, kind, hardworking, and masters of their trade. We feel blessed to have designed and built our forever home with this husband-and-wife team. After my husband and I purchased our land we knew that we wanted to build a single story home but were ignorant of the building process and where to begin. We searched the internet and found four local builders. After contacting the first three, we weren’t thrilled with the idea of working with any of them. Hurd was fourth on the list. I called and Mel answered. Not long into the conversation she asked the questions that no one else had been asking. “What’s your vision? Tell me about your land. Does it have a well and septic? Do you have a lender? What’s your timeline?”. Mel was patient as I told her “I don’t know” to many of the questions. We scheduled a site visit with Russ and he was just as easy to talk to as Mel. We felt encouraged by Russ’s transparency and food for thought. Mel, Russ, and VP Natasha were there for us throughout the design phase and planning. At those meetings they reassured us that it was good to ask questions and communicate our wants and needs. Once we started building it was like magic. Each week we saw so much progress. Interacting with the subcontractors was inspiring because we witnessed the tremendous pride each man and woman put into their work. My sons and I sat at the end of the driveway to catch the 6:45 and 7:55 am school busses and were frequently greeted by skilled tradesmen already on the job. It’s important to recognize the Hurd’s project manager, the incredible Billy Bliss. Billy worked meticulously to ensure the symmetry we designed for was followed through in the field and contributed to reaching the high standard we were striving for. This is what custom home building is all about – the fine details. In a nutshell, we absolutely love our home. We are beyond happy with our new HURD built home. The entire team is knowledgeable and easy to work with. Mel is charming and helped us with the initial decisions. She gave us excellent advice and helped us stay within budget. Natasha held our hands during all the decision making about cabinets, flooring, etc. We appreciated that she met us at each appointment and gave wonderful support. Russ is extremely knowledgeable about all the home system requirements such as electrical, septic, heating, etc. He was able to give advice and guidance all along the way and is still helping us now that we are living here. After purchasing property to build our dream house, my wife and I assessed multiple home builders before selecting the Hurds. Where we were left feeling like a random number with some, or that we'd need to watch others like a hawk, we felt like we found good teammates in Russ and Mel. Immediately, Russ made a positive impact, working with our architect to clarify and simplify some unique technical aspects of our house design. We always hesitated on building a home because of the story's we heard on how stressful it is, and the thing's go wrong. When we finally decided to build our next home we immediately knew Russ, Mel, and Natasha were the ones that we wanted to build it. Our hesitations never became a reality because of them. The process was easy, fun and exciting. They truly care about the quality product they put forward, and forge relationships with their clients. We cannot say enough great things about Hurd Builders and the sub contractors they use. When the home was delivered it was actually bittersweet. We were happy to finally have our dream home, but were somewhat sad we would not be seeing Russ, Mel and Natasha any more. We worked with Hurd Builders to build our custom home, and then we had them back to finish our basement. We cannot say enough good things. They are reliable, honest, and clearly take pride in their work. They also get a lot of joy making their customer’s ideas a reality. Two of the biggest issues I hear from friends and neighbors who built their own homes are outrageous cost overages and repeated problems. Hurd’s pricing is realistic. Baring unavoidable, unexpected expenses, you will be able to complete your project within a reasonable margin. We made selections for our house without compromising on design or quality. We ended up having a small overage that we thought was quite predictable and reasonable. As for problems, there will always be a couple surprises. And surprises are far different than the nightmares you hear of that result from the poor planning and communication other builders are known for. One of the great things about Hurd Builders is that they mitigate the stress the customer experiences by handling most issues. If that can’t be done, expect a patient, clear explanation. They’ll follow that explanation by collaborating with you to resolve the issue. Their integrity was never more obvious than when we had a handful of conversations about unavoidable problems. As if that all isn’t enough, when they found out our previous home was selling, they tightened the schedule of the remaining work. They worked very quickly the last few weeks to get us into our home in time. We were incredibly grateful for them taking care of our family in this deeply personal way.
